Cangfu Daotan Pill

The Cangfu Daotan Pill (also known as Cangfu Phlegm-Resolving Pill) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula historically used to address specific health concerns in women. In TCM, these issues are often associated with what’s called "phlegm-dampness" accumulation, which isn't always about mucus but can refer to a broader pattern of sluggishness, fluid retention, and metabolic imbalances affecting various bodily functions, especially reproductive health.

Formula Verse (Fang Ge):
Cangfu Daotan features Chenpi and Fuling,
Zhixia, Shenqu, Gancao, and Nanxing.

Cangfu Daotan Pill: How It's Prepared and Used

Ingredients:

  • Processed Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu): 2 liang (approx. 60g)
  • Cyperus Rhizome (Xiang Fu): 2 liang (approx. 60g; historically prepared by soaking in child's urine, a traditional processing method to enhance its therapeutic properties)
  • Aged Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi): 1.5 liang (approx. 45g, pith removed)
  • Processed Arisaema Rhizome (Nan Xing): 1 liang (approx. 30g, specially prepared; Note: Raw Nan Xing is toxic and requires professional processing for safe use. Always ensure this herb is prepared by a qualified practitioner.)
  • Stir-fried Bitter Orange Peel (Zhi Ke): 1 liang (approx. 30g, stir-fried with wheat bran)
  • Processed Pinellia Rhizome (Ban Xia): 1 liang (approx. 30g; Note: Raw Ban Xia is toxic and must be professionally processed before consumption. Adhere strictly to practitioner guidelines.)
  • Szechuan Lovage Rhizome (Chuan Xiong): 1 liang (approx. 30g)
  • Levigated Talc (Hua Shi): 4 liang (approx. 120g, finely powdered)
  • White Poria Mushroom (Bai Fu Ling): 1.5 liang (approx. 45g)
  • Stir-fried Medicated Leaven (Shen Qu): 1 liang (approx. 30g)

Preparation & Usage:
Traditionally, all the above ingredients are ground into a fine powder. This powder is then mixed with ginger juice and a binding agent, such as steamed biscuits, to form small pills, roughly the size of a Chinese parasol tree seed (about 3-4mm in diameter).

As a more modern alternative, you can prepare this formula as a convenient herbal tea. Each ingredient should be ground separately into a coarse powder, then mixed thoroughly. Divide the combined mixture into 30 small sachets or tea bags. To use, steep 1-2 sachets in boiling water daily and drink it like regular tea.

This formula is traditionally used to address a range of conditions, particularly:

  • Overweight women experiencing difficulty conceiving.
  • Symptoms akin to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), characterized by a robust physique with excessive phlegm, vital energy (Qi) deficiency, and irregular menstruation (where periods occur only every few months). (PMID: 30379051)
  • Obese individuals with abundant phlegm leading to amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation).
  • Overweight individuals with vital energy (Qi) deficiency, which in turn generates phlegm and results in excessive leukorrhea (vaginal discharge). (PMID: 29082531)
